FAQs
Get the answers to Agreena’s most frequently asked questions.
-
What is the definitions of tillage practices?
No till - Passing with a drill to seeding depth. Reduced tillage: Anytime to 10cm + exceptions including low disturbance sub soiling get in touch for more details. Anything else is conventional tillage.
-
Can temporary grass leys be included?
Yes, however we require there to be a yield from the field and the temporary grass to be part of an arable roation.
-
Who owns the carbon? The tenant or the landlord?
We need to have a contractual relationship with the active farmer who has management decisions over the farm management practices. We recommend that the farmer if he does not own the land should inform the landowner as to the actions he is taking.
-
How much of a comeback can there be if the calculations change?
None, the certificates are produced to the standard at the time. So for example 2023 certificates are issued and sold based on the methodology at the time.
-
Does the farm or field credit sales get registered to that land so it can be identified in the future?
We of course know and record the field the certificates originated from.
-
Does this affect the output of the carbon toolkit?
No, you can do a carbon footprint of your whole farm if you wish. But you cannot double claim. Which is why each year a farmer decided how to use his certificates.
-
If you withdraw from the scheme – what is the liability if you change farming practices?
There is no liability on the farmer, Agreena takes on that risk and responsibility but because our program is now so flexible we see no reason why a farmer would leave unless he sold or lost control of the land of course.
-
Does this fit with SFI?
Yes, you can enter both SFI and Agreena Carbon programme and earn from both income streams.
-
What crops do we cover?
Agreena covers all rotational arable crops including grasses and legumes. There is a full list of crops that we accept on our website.
-
How long can I keep certificates for?
There is no expiry date on a certificate, so you can hold on to it as long as you wish.
-
How much does it cost?
There are no upfront payments to Agreena. We work for 15% of the certificates generated, meaning that we only earn our 15% once we issue the carbon certificates to the farmer.
-
Can I enter fields into a programme which are currently in SFI or other environmental schemes?
Yes, you are able to enter other schemes such as the SFI. There is no conflict between the Agreena programme and other agri environmental schemes. However, you aren't allowed to enter other carbon schemes on the same land or claim for Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG).
-
Does my farm have to be net zero to sell carbon?
No, there is no legislation saying that your farm has to be net zero. It is your decision and if you would prefer to offset your farm's emissions before selling any carbon that is your decision. You have the complete control over what happens to your carbon certificates.
-
Are there any mandatory requirements for me entering into the scheme?
No, there are no mandatory requirements to enter the Agreena programme. The farmer will however need to be adopting one of these practices such as reduced/no till, cover cropping, organic fertiliser or residue management to generate carbon certificates. If the farmer isn't generating any certificates from their practices they will probably decide not to join the Agreena scheme.
-
Do I have to be a regenerative farmer to join the programme?
No, you do not have to be a regenerative farmer but you will have to be adopting sustainable farming practices to generate certificates. The farm has full flexibility over their practice but each year we will take into account what has happened on each field and quantify your carbon potential for that year.
